AI in practice: 3 real uses of AI described

What this episode covers

Jarred Knecht, founder of AI quality inspection software KonnectAi and president of ProEV and ECI, explains how his family’s wire harness business evolved from industrial sectors to EV and defense markets. He details the development of KonnectAi, an AI-powered visual inspection tool designed to replace the irreplaceable institutional knowledge of veteran inspectors like 'Joe' without adding cost or complexity. Knecht discusses the challenges of implementing technology in traditional manufacturing, emphasizing a 'baby steps' approach to workforce adoption and the strategic value of AI in business development and talent retention.

The team developed an AI-based quality inspection software that uses computer vision to automatically inspect products for defects without manual interaction, replacing the need for a veteran inspector's subjective judgment.

“so we said, okay, well, can we use cameras? Can we use vision to do this? And we discovered that we can. And but we said, well, wait, you know, we're in a high mix environment. … So then the team came and said, okay, I think we can maybe use AI for this. Because it has the processing power to look at these images, look and say whether it's good or bad very quickly.”

PrototypingKonnectAIused in-house for about a year

The team developed a prototype of their AI quality inspection software and tested it in their own production facility for approximately one year before expanding to other sites.

“So we ran with that. We developed our prototype software. We used it in-house, in our own production facility for about a year, then we expanded it to 5 other facilities within the ECI. umbrella, so all inspecting different processes, crimping, taping, label placement, all these obscure things that happen.”

The AI system integrates a camera, screen, and Wi-Fi connection into the workflow to automatically identify products and flag defects without adding production time or requiring manual data entry, effectively creating a 'Joe 2.0' inspector.

“So we incorporated division system during our working processes. It's literally a camera, screen, Wi-Fi connection up to the software, you show the item into the camera, and that's all there is to do. There's no menu to call up. There's no system to tell the camera what it is that it's looking at. It looks at it and it knows what it is.”

Revolutionizing Inspection with AI: Loopr.ai Founder & CEO Priyansha Bagaria on EMS@C-Level

Priyansha Bagaria, founder and CEO of Loopr.ai, explains how her company uses AI-powered computer vision to automate quality inspection in aerospace, automotive, and general manufacturing. She details the deployment of their software applications, IQ Inspect for defect identification and IQ Verify for assembly verification, which are hardware-agnostic and integrate with existing camera infrastructure. Bagaria highlights key industry pain points, including the high cost of quality, labor shortages, and the loss of institutional knowledge as experienced workers retire, arguing that AI provides the consistency and scalability that human inspection cannot. She also discusses Loopr's strategic partnership with Microsoft and the importance of starting with high-value pilot projects to demonstrate clear ROI before scaling across factory floors.

Markets, Mayhem and Manufacturing: Insights on the Future of Electronics Manufacturing in the America

Joel Scutchfield, General Manager of Koh Young America, discusses how economic headwinds and tariff uncertainties are creating a divide in the electronics manufacturing industry, with some companies pausing investment while others expand capacity. He explains that the post-pandemic growth surge was an anomaly, establishing a 'new normal' where manufacturers must leverage AI to increase productivity without expanding their workforce. Scutchfield details Koh Young's progression from data collection to 'agentic' AI systems, specifically highlighting their KAP (Koh Young Auto-Programming) tool and KPO (Koh Young Process Optimization) tools that automate parameter adjustments for printers and mounters. The conversation emphasizes that trustworthy, high-volume 3D data is the critical foundation for these autonomous, self-correcting systems that reduce human intervention on the factory floor.

BONUS - Koh Young Research America's Dr. Brian Kang on AI at APEX 2023 - EMSNOW & SCOOP On Location

Dr. Brian Kang, Director and Head of R&D at Koh Young Research America, discusses the application of AI in electronic manufacturing and inspection during an interview at APEX 2023. He explains that AI helps mitigate labor shortages by optimizing human effort in programming, quality improvement, and review processes. Kang emphasizes that data quality is more critical than data volume for training effective machine learning models. He notes that the industry has moved from conceptual AI to realizing practical, deployable solutions on the factory floor.

AI's Role in Manufacturing Efficiency and NPI Success with Instrumental CEO Anna-Katrina Shedletsky

Anna-Katrina Shedletsky, CEO and founder of Instrumental, discusses how her company uses AI to accelerate New Product Introduction (NPI) and improve manufacturing efficiency. She highlights a case study with Meta, where Instrumental's technology saved 900 engineering weeks annually across seven programs by identifying defects earlier in the EVT phase. Shedletsky explains the concept of the 'shadow factory' (rework and bone piles) and how reducing its size frees up capacity. She also advises manufacturers to focus AI adoption on solving specific, high-impact business problems rather than chasing trends, noting Instrumental's nine-year journey from startup to an established player in the contract electronics space.
