## Summary

Jeff Winter, Senior Director of Industry Strategy for Manufacturing at Hitachi Solutions, discusses the necessity of formalizing innovation in manufacturing to keep pace with rapid technological change. He defines innovation broadly using Doblin’s 10 types, arguing that it is a disciplined process rather than just invention or technology adoption. Winter highlights the gap between the speed of innovation and organizational adaptation, citing Metcalfe’s Law, and outlines steps to formalize innovation such as creating strategy, appointing leaders, and cultivating culture. He illustrates these points with examples from Procter & Gamble’s Connect & Develop program and Shelley Group’s IoT-driven smart warranty model.
