## Summary

John Chweya, President of the Kenya National Waste Pickers Welfare Association, explains how 36,000 waste pickers in Kenya are organized to advocate for fair pricing and direct sales to recyclers, bypassing exploitative aggregators. He details his journey from a child waste picker in Kisumu to a global advocate recognized by Time Magazine and the UN, highlighting the systemic stigmatization and economic exploitation faced by the community. Chweya describes a GoFundMe campaign to purchase a truck, which will enable waste pickers to transport recyclables directly to recyclers, ensuring equitable trade and financial sustainability rather than relying on charity. The episode emphasizes the need for policy recognition of waste pickers' integral role in the recycling industry and plastic pollution control.
