## Summary

Mark Dodd, Head of IoT at Woosh, explains how his company retrofits existing HVAC systems with a reusable smart filter frame to monitor air quality and reduce landfill waste. The device uses a differential pressure sensor and proprietary cloud algorithms to notify users when to replace the foldable filter, solving the guesswork of traditional maintenance. Dodd details the engineering challenges, including a critical failure where initial flow-through sensors clogged with dust, which was resolved by designing a specialized, dust-resistant sampling geometry. The company, headquartered in South San Francisco, partners with 3M for filter media and is exploring adjacent markets like laundromats and short-term rentals.
