## Summary

Gerhard Loots, CEO of Caliper and Madison Group, discusses the challenges of building extreme edge IoT devices for infrastructure digitization, specifically focusing on wastewater management with Sydney Water. He details technical hurdles like corrosive environments, poor cellular reception, and the critical need to extend battery life and reduce deployment costs as devices scale from dozens to tens of thousands. The conversation also explores the lack of standardization in battery metrics, the potential of energy harvesting technologies like graphene and ambient RF, and the unique operational dynamics of running a tech company in Australia.
