## Summary

Alicia Asin, CEO and co-founder of Libelium, discusses the evolution of the smart city landscape, moving from early maker platforms to sophisticated, data-driven municipal solutions. She outlines three core pillars for smart city adoption: making citizens happier, reducing carbon footprints, and increasing municipal revenue. Asin highlights critical challenges such as vendor lock-in, interoperability, and cybersecurity, while emphasizing the importance of data quality and citizen empowerment, citing the Fukushima radiation monitoring effort as a key example. She concludes by predicting the dominance of cellular connectivity (NB-IoT, 5G) and the transformative potential of combining IoT with blockchain for automated processes like parametric insurance.
