## Summary

Futurist Ian Khan joins EE Times editor-in-chief Brian Santo to discuss the transition from the government-led Cold War space race to the current commercial era driven by billionaires like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Richard Branson. Khan argues that this new competition accelerates technological innovation through cross-fertilization, benefiting fields like nanomedicine, water purification, and global broadband connectivity via Starlink. He emphasizes that while commercial space tourism will remain expensive for decades, the underlying engineering breakthroughs are essential for solving terrestrial problems and expanding human civilization.
